Description

La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls seeks a Gym Assistant who will be responsible for ensuring the readiness and care for our athletic facility while ensuring safety among our athletes and visitors during athletic events.

The ideal candidate will fulfill the responsibilities and possess most or all of the qualifications outlined below:

Duties and Responsibilities

Athletic Event Set-up and Management:

  • Pre-game set-up:  volleyball game net, score table and cash box with change (when needed)
  • Set up officials’ area (in first aid room or end of athletic locker room hallway)
  • Wet mop gym floor before each interscholastic games (preseason and regular season)
  • Sweep bleachers to ensure they are free of dust and rubbish and ready for spectator seating
  • Check gym bathrooms and locker rooms for soap, toilet paper, and replenish as needed
  • Ensure first aid kit/supplies and ice bags on hand.  Assist with accidents/injuries (non-medical).
  • Turn on tennis court & banyan tree lights for night games/events and turn them off after
  • When it rains, check gym floor for wet spots from ceiling leaks or rain blown in
  • Set up event parking information signs in upper lot and campus entrance
  • Check upper parking lot so that no one is loitering and cars are parking/have parked appropriately
  • Demonstrate game management skills (continually monitor spectators, coaches, officials, and students in the gym and bleachers for appropriate behavior and sportsmanship; facilities and equipment for proper function, safety, and use during athletic competition, etc.)
  • Monitor and support scoreboard/timer, scorekeepers, and ticket sellers/gate/cash box person who is working
  • Monitor and reinforce the following:  NO gum, food, or drink in the gym and NO black sole shoes or high heel shoes on the court
  • Turn off all lights (gym, locker rooms, bathrooms, P.E. office, and the weight room)
  • Check all doors (Gary room, 4 main gym doors, locker room, both ends of hallway doors). Secure the gymnasium and athletic facilities at the end of games or events
  • Ensure all students have been picked up after athletic events prior to departing campus (especially at night time)
  • Lock the main entrance gate if you are the last one to leave campus

Non-Athletic Event Facility Maintenance :

  • Clean gym floor (dry mop 2x / wk. and wet mop 1x / wk)
  • Sweep and clean main entrance area
  • Use spot removal solution to remove all black marks on the gym floor
  • Vacuum gym floor runners around the court (1x / wk.)
  • Monitor and reinforce the following at all times:  NO gum, food, and drink in the gym and NO black sole shoes or high heel shoes on the court
  • Train timers, scorekeepers, and ticket sales/cash box for working at games.
  • Check and replace shower curtains and hangers as needed
  • Clean behind the bleachers when they are pulled out
  • Vacuum weight room and wipe down fitness room equipment/machines regularly (1x / wk.)
  • Perform additional functions as necessary to ensure safety and security in the gym, and to facilitate smooth operations in the gym for athletic events and activities.

Requirements

General Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Individual with organized and systematic approach to completing tasks
  • Ability to follow instructions working independently or cooperatively with other athletic department personnel
  • Skilled communicator with the ability to positively interact with students, coaches, officials, and parents/spectators with a service-oriented personality and a can-do attitude
  • Demonstrates high integrity and work ethic; sensitive with confidential information
  • Experience working in a school environment preferred

Position Details

  • Athletic Department: Support
  • Status: Part-time, seasonal (up to 19 hrs. / wk.)
  • FLSA Status: Non-exempt
  • Work year: 10-months (August to May)
  • Work hours: availability Monday through Friday: 2:15 PM – 8:30 PM; some Saturdays. Occasional, infrequent flexibility for earlier or later for special circumstances.
