About the Place & Purpose Learning Role

We seek a passionate and dedicated teacher to join our faculty to teach courses focused on Place & Purpose Learning. This is an opportunity to inspire young women to develop a strong sense of leadership, civic engagement, and cultural stewardship. The Place & Purpose Learning Teacher will guide students in exploring their connection to place, community, and leadership through hands-on experiences and interdisciplinary learning. Courses integrate themes of land stewardship, civic engagement, and leadership, emphasizing Hawai‘i’s history, environment, and governance. The ideal candidate will create dynamic, student-centered learning experiences that empower students as informed leaders and engaged community members, while also teaching them valuable skills of self-reflection and personal growth.

What You’ll Do

Teaching & Curriculum Development

  • Teach Place & Purpose Learning 6, Place & Purpose Learning 7, and Civics in Hawai‘i (Grade 8), fostering a sense of purpose, civic engagement, and environmental stewardship.
  • Design and implement interdisciplinary, experiential lessons that connect students with their local environment and community.
  • Incorporate project-based learning, fieldwork, and partnerships with local organizations.
  • Guide students in developing leadership skills, ethical decision-making, and self-reflection.

School-Wide Contributions

  • Participate in faculty meetings, school events, and professional development.
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives focused on student leadership and community engagement, including summer programming.
  • Support and uphold La Pietra’s mission and values.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of May Day.

Requirements

essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Studies, Environmental Studies, Hawaiian Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience at the middle school level.
  • Strong background in place-based learning, civics, environmental education, or leadership development.
  • Passion for working with young women and fostering student leadership.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • You will be here in-person, on campus, ready to get to work by August 1, 2025. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i.
  • Experience with experiential and project-based learning approaches.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history, and environmental stewardship practices.
  • Experience in an all-girls independent school setting.
  • Experience in leading educational trips that enhance curricular objectives through immersive, real-world learning.

Physical & Cognitive Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Capacity to adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork and off-campus learning experiences.
  • Capacity to move about campus and interact with students in both indoor and outdoor learning environments.
  • Ability to use standard office and educational technology, including computers, projectors, and learning management systems.

Work Environment

  • This position operates in a classroom, outdoor, and community-based learning environment.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend work for school events and field-based learning experiences.
