La Pietra's Spring Production of AS YOU LIKE IT goes Virtual

February 25th, 2022

Part of the cast of La Pietra's Spring Production of AS YOU LIKE IT

La Pietra is proud to present this year's Spring Production of William Shakespeare's sparkling comedy, As You Like It! The play pits the corrupt artifice of courtly politics against the simple values of country life, teaching important lessons to the characters in both worlds. Students have been hard at work putting in extra hours of rehearsal time, and now it's finally time to take the stage!

Although there will be no live performances this year, the show WILL go on! The cast and crew will be filmed during a performance captured by Olelo Community Media. In May, the production will be broadcast on Olelo and be shared on YouTube for friends, family, and the community to view.

This private opening night performance will take place on Friday, February 25, so break a leg to everyone involved in this year's production!

So why Shakespeare for this year's production? Theatre Director Eden Lee Murray says it's because his plays offer rich and demanding material for performers and audiences alike.

"The characters are larger-than-life, demanding BIG acting choices, and full-on commitment to those choices," Murray says in her director's notes. "The text is challenging — it takes a good deal of effort to untie the knots of the complex poetry, but when actors persevere and succeed, the rewards are enormous — the magnificent language takes flight with an energy that is thrilling to experience. It has been a joy to work with this cast of young actors."

Earlier in January, Co-founder and Producer of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival Tony Pisculli  joined the student actors on campus to set a couple of scuffles, which will be done in slow motion while the actors are safely distanced. Pisculli is also Hawaii’s premiere fight choreographer and has been teaching stage combat and directing fights for more than 20 years. You can read more about what went on behind the scenes here
