February 9th, 2024

Get an inside look at this year's Special Guest Day and learn about what went into planning the event.

La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls hosted students from neighboring schools today during its annual Special Guest Day. The decades-old school tradition invites students from public schools in pre-kindergarten through third grade with special needs to its Diamond Head campus for a day of fun.

“For a lot of us that work here, I think this is our favorite day of the year,” said La Pietra’s Director of Human Resources Dawn Ijiri. “I think our students love it. They really connect with the little youngsters and just have such a great time. It really fills your cup and fills your soul.”

SPECIAL GUEST DAY HIGHLIGHTS

This year, the theme is “Sky’s the Limit,” and special guests were paired with La Pietra students to experience pony rides, a petting zoo, a bounce house, and carnival-style games and activities. Members of the Honolulu Fire and Police Departments were also on campus. Students got an up-close look at a fire truck and also had the opportunity to make their own Keiki ID.

“We’re kind of encouraging the idea that you can achieve whatever you want to achieve if you put your mind to it,” said Abigail “Abby” Moe, a junior at La Pietra and a member of the volunteer student committee tasked with planning the event. “I personally really love being that big sister to them for the day. I feel grateful that I get to put that smile on that kid’s face.”
