La Pietra Celebrates 59 Years of Educating Young Women to Lead a Life of Purpose

September 8th, 2023

Head of School Jennifer Grems introduces Mr. Tomas' sixth-grade music to sing the alma mater, "La Pietra Days."

On September 9, 1964, Hawai‘i School for Girls opened its doors at Central Union Church. The school honored that legacy on Friday, September 8, 2023 by celebrating 59 years of educating young women to lead a life of purpose.

Students, faculty, staff, trustees, and honored guests gathered in the Fountain Courtyard to sing “Happy Birthday” along with the school’s alma mater, “La Pietra Days,” accompanied by music teacher Mr. Tomas Ramos and his sixth-grade music class on the ‘ukulele. With music by Nancy Hunt and lyrics by alumna Helene Scatcherd ’92, composed as part of her Independent Project, the school’s alma mater serves to remind students that their own La Pietra days hold memories and friendships they will cherish forever.

Happy Birthday, La Pietra!

“Fifty-nine years later, over 1,700 women have graduated from La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls,” said Head of School Jennifer Grems. “Our purpose-driven alumnae have excelled in their chosen fields, becoming doctors, lawyers, activists, educators, artists, and business leaders. La Pietra has left an indelible mark on generations of young women, providing them with an education that is both empowering and transformative.”

To this day, La Pietra – Hawaiʻi School for Girls continues to educate, nurture, and celebrate young women. Mahalo for being part of our community as we look ahead to our 60th anniversary and beyond!
