La Pietra Students Share Kahiau Spirit at Beach Cleanup

October 13th, 2022

Service Day is an annual tradition at La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls. It’s a chance for students to bond while also giving back to the community during a day of service. Energy was high this year as students piled into buses and made their way to Kalama Beach to participate in a beach cleanup with Kailua Beach Adventures.

Kahiau, or selfless giving, is a core value of a La Pietra education, and it’s the foundation of the school’s tight-knit community. Events like Service Day are just one of the ways La Pietra strives to ensure all students help others without the expectation of return or reward. This generosity of spirit becomes a way of life for girls during their time at La Pietra and beyond.

While at Kalama Beach, students gathered 20 pounds of microplastics and 10 additional pounds of trash. For Melody, a junior at La Pietra, the work being done on this Service Day hits close to home, as her passion for protecting our planet is evident through her leadership in the Environmental Activism Club. This school year marks the second year she will co-lead the club.

Melody is also part of La Pietra’s National Honor Society chapter. One of the program’s four main pillars is service, a theme that continues throughout various parts of student life at La Pietra.

With a small school environment, La Pietra is able to provide students with unique experiences they may not otherwise get at larger schools. Students have more one-on-one time with their teachers, form a special sisterhood with their classmates, and get greater access to leadership and sports opportunities. They even have the ability to start their own clubs and propose their own passion projects in order to discover their own unique sense of purpose.

We invite you to learn more about La Pietra and our welcoming community during our Admissions Open House on Sunday, November 6 from 2 - 4 p.m. Meet caring and supportive faculty members, hear from current students and parents to learn more about student life, and become an honorary member of our Panther community!
