La Pietra and HAIS Partner to Pilot "Art and Story"

The Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) has partnered with La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls to pilot Art and Story, a 7-week project on cultivating personal creativity and artistic expression as a means to build the confidence, self-awareness, and the fearless voices of students and future leaders. The project will provide students the opportunity to engage with artistic tools, such as poetry, visual journaling, painting, rhythm and movement.
By the end of the seven weeks, students will have created a short approximately five-minute personal narrative film that incorporates an artistic tool. Each student will also be part of a mini documentary, in which they will share their short film along with the journey they went through exploring creative expression as a resource for self. They will reflect upon and share how engaging with artistic tools could be a resource for themselves in other endeavors. Both the personal narrative film and the mini documentary will be shared on the HAIS website as well as shown on the local educational TEACH channel to encourage other students to engage with artistic outlets.
All sessions will be facilitated by Kelsey Matsu. Kelsey is a documentary storyteller. She also has her PhD in Educational Psychology and is currently pursuing certification in Expressive Arts Therapy, Coaching and Consultation. She believes in awakening our aesthetic imagination in ways that give life and story to the fullest expression of who we are.
