Students Hold Silent Auction in Support of Susan G. Komen Foundation

October 27th, 2021

Students set up for a silent auction fundraiser in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and breast cancer research

As part of a series of community service projects in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, members of Student Council's Breast Cancer Awareness Committee organized the school's first-ever silent auction fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support its four pillars of research, care, community, and action!

Students, faculty and staff members were welcomed into the Student Learning Center where they could bid on a variety of items: self-care items like lip balm and face masks, candy gift bags, and even one-of-a-kind jewelry and art pieces handmade by students.

8th-graders Cella S. and Makena O. are members of the Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising subcommittee. For Cella, joining the committee and helping to spread awareness about the cause strikes a personal chord. "My grandma had it, and so that’s kind of part of why I wanted to join the committee," she said.

Student paintings depicting a portrait of a woman and a city are added to the silent auction.

While Cella and Makena say planning for the silent auction caused a bit of stress, they also say it was a lot of fun. And while the final total raised for the Komen Foundation has not been calculated, the pair says many of the auction's items sold for $50-$90.

"We didn't expect that many people," Cella said. "Or that much money!" Makena added.

Mahalo to everyone who took the time to drop by the silent auction and support the cause, and congratulations to the item winners! If you are looking to learn more about the disease and help to spread awareness, you can find additional resources from the Susan G. Komen Foundation here:
