We have 62 student athletes participating on 11 La Pietra or Pac-5 teams in seven different sports this Winter Sports season. Some teams have first time student athletes who are learning the sport for the first time while other student athletes are striving to lead their teams to state championship competitions and achieve personal records in their events. Whichever the case, our La Pietra student athletes are having positive sport experiences learning and competing in their sport and more importantly learning valuable life lessons such as teamwork, industriousness, poise, cooperation, patience, and confidence.
Our four La Pietra Varsity swimmers on the Pac-5 team, Rose Garcia ('20) Yu Ishii ('21), Madeline Soltis ('21), and Jodi Onoye ('22)have all qualified to participate in two relay events at the HHSAA State Swimming Championship Meet coming up on February 8 and 9! The state meet will be held at the Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP) Aquatic Center. Rose and Yu are currently among the top swimmers in the ILH and have both qualified for multiple individual swim events at states as well.
During the first week of December, the 11 student athletes on the La Pietra Varsity Basketball team had the opportunity to travel to the Pineapple Islefor the Honolulu Freight Lanai Classic Girls Basketball Tournament hosted by Lanai High School. Having an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime, shared experience and getting valuable basketball game experience before ILH season play were the goals and both were achieved on the trip. With only four returners and four first time players, the young team learned and improved each game throughout the ILH season. Coaches and players are excited and looking forward to the summer and next season where they can continue building on the strides made this school year. The varsity team will have 10 of the 11 players returning for their 2019 – 2020 campaign.
This Winter Sports season saw four alumnae and a faculty member from La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls giving their time to coach in our La Pietra and Pac-5 programs. Former La Pietra starting setter Carmen Sharkey ('15)gave her time to co-head coach of our 6thGrade CSAL Volleyball team while she was back on Oahu finishing her last semester of undergraduate classes at Arizona State University online. The 15 sixth graders on the team loved having Carmen as one of their coaches. They had fun, learned a great deal, and competed well throughout their CSAL season. In December, Carmen returned to ASU to participate in her graduation ceremony and receive her bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
The Pac-5 girls canoe paddling program that has 13 La Pietra student athletes participating are fortunate to have two of our La Pietra graduates, Kahala Schneider ('12)and Taeler Akana ('12)sharing their knowledge as assistant coaches. Both were part of Pac-5 State Championship winning crew in their senior year (2012). This year's Pac-5 JV, Varsity, and mixed crews have one ILH regatta remaining. The varsity girls team with three La Pietra paddlers in the boat has consistently been finishing in fourth place throughout the season.
On the hard court, Leanne Gillespie ('87 maiden name Leanne Merritt)laced it up and stepped in as assistant coach for our Intermediate Basketball team under the team's head coach, Dr. Jeanette Hall. With 9 of the 11 student athletes being first-time intermediate players, this year's emphasis was on learning the game of basketball and how to compete. The young Lady Panthers found a love for the game of basketball and responded to their coaches showing tenacity and grit throughout the season that included wins over Hawaii Baptist Academy and University Lab School.Pac-5 JV Precision Air Riflery athlete Hadleigh Dumale and Pac-5 Varsity Wrestling athlete Lani Jenkinsare in the midst of their ILH seasons competing for their respective teams.
