La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls has named Dr. Josh Watson as its next Head of School. Watson will take over at the end of the 2016-2017 school year for Mahina Eleneki Hugo, who will leave her position at the end of the school year.
In August 2016, Alice Guild, La Pietra's Board of Trustees' Chair wrote, "Our wonderful Head of School, Mahina Hugo, has informed the Board of Trustees that she will be leaving La Pietra – Hawaii School for Girls at the end of the 2016-2017 school year."
Hugo has been at La Pietra for 25 years, serving as the Head of School since 2007. Prior to becoming Head of School, Hugo served as a Physical Education Teacher, Associate Admissions Director, and Middle School Dean at La Pietra.
In her August 2016 letter, Guild praised Hugo, "Her gracious and cordial demeanor has been well recognized on campus, as well as her Hawaiian sense of place, as she has greatly contributed to the culture and essence of what makes La Pietra such an extraordinary school environment for young women."
Guild credited Hugo with being an exceptional administrator, transforming classrooms to 21st century learning centers, raising funds for school improvements and financial aid, and navigating the accreditation with the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC).
After an extensive search process for the new Head of School, the Board of Trustees announced in April 2017 that Dr. Watson will be the new Head of School effective July 1, 2017.
The Board Of Trustees stated, "We welcome Dr. Watson and look forward to his leadership in the continuation of excellence in education with a focus on 21st century learning and skills. We also want to thank current Head of School, Mahina Hugo, for her leadership and support."
Dr. Watson has extensive experience in all aspects of school administration, teaching and counseling. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Principal for Student Life at Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu.
