2018 Spring Sports Wrap Up

During the 2017-2018 Spring Athletic Season, there were 37 student athletes who participated in seven different sports.

Coached by La Pietra faculty member, Ms. Jeannette Hall, the 6thGrade Basketball team had seven student-athletes. For most of the players on the team it was their first basketball team experience. During practice, students learned basic skills and fundamentals to prepare them for competition against eight other CSAL schools.

For the La Pietra & Sacred Hearts Intermediate, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Golf teams there were three La Pietra student-athletes who participated. Kelsey Nakagawa '19 was on the Varsity I team, while Savannah Ames '21 and Esther Jung '23 competed on the Intermediate team. La Pietra coach and parent, Steven Nakagawa shared, "All three players showed tremendous growth and improvement throughout the season."

The sport of Water Polo team returned after a year of not having a Pac-5 team last year. The Varsity II La Pietra & Sacred Hearts Water Polo team consisted of two first-year water polo student-athletes, Ten Kusaka '20 and Carly Yamada '19. The team was coached by La Pietra 6thgrade swimming coach and former Pac-5 Water Polo Coach Maria Jarrell. The team practiced at the La Pietra swimming pool and had a very successful season beating Mid-Pacific, Iolani, and Kamehameha.

On the Pac-5 Intermediate, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Track & Field, there were seven student-athletes who represented La Pietra on the Pac-5 track teams in the sprints, hurdles, and distance races.

Student-athlete, Madeleine Heckman '23, from La Pietra joined the Pac-5 Intermediate Judo team. In her first year, she learned about the rules and fundamentals of the sport and had the opportunity to compete in matches.

The La Pietra & Maryknoll Varsity Tennis included student-athlete Trinity Ung '19. Trinity moved up to the Varsity level for the Spring season after being the top player on the Junior Varsity team during the Fall. She competed well throughout the season making it to the second round of the ILH Postseason Varsity Tennis Tournament before bowing out to the number one seeded player.


Faculty Member, Mr. Jack Wade, coached the La Pietra Middle School and High School Archery team and prepared the student-athletes for the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) State Championships held in April. With 14 student-athletes in the program, it was the largest team the program has had in its six year existence. Seven student-athletes competed at the State Championships with top finisher, Sami Aguila '24, placing 3rd in the middle school division.


To recognize all of the efforts of our athletes and coaches, a Junior Varsity & Varsity Athletic Banquet was held on May 3rdand a Middle School Awards Ceremony was held on May 11.

There were over 110 student-athletes, parents, coaches, administration, and teachers who were recognized for their achievements at the Banquet held at the La Pietra gymnasium. The gymnasium was transformed to a Hawaiian themed event that included a Hawaiian style dinner, recognition and awards for the La Pietra and Pac-5 teams by their coaches, a slideshow with athletic highlights, and recognition of the Senior student-athletes. The athlete of the year award went to Alexandra Strack '18 and the Unsung Heroine Award was shared by Arianna Radona '19 and Carly Yamada '19. The Middle School Athletic Awards Ceremony was attended by nearly 100 student-athletes and guests. Athletic Director, Ross Kinsler, recognized each athlete in their sport with an athletic certificate and medal. The event was followed by an ice cream social catered by Black Sheep Cream Company, owned and operated by La Pietra graduate and former student-athlete Tasi Reid '14.
