Middle School is a time of transition, a time of exploration, and a time of tremendous growth. As middle schoolers attempt to define who they are, it is important that they are given the support and encouragement they need to find their unique path.
At La Pietra, our middle school program is designed to do just that. It has a special focus on exploration of a variety of academic, social, and emotional experiences so that when they rise to the upper school, they have a sense of who they are, and can envision a fulfilling future.
Several themes are emphasized in our Middle School program:
Exploration and Discovery
Middle School is a time to learn about what piques interests and to define passions. With exposure to a wide variety of courses and activities, we encourage each student to try new things and to pursue what excites her.
Both curricular and extracurricular activities are designed to promote and enhance healthy and positive relationships with peers and adults, creating a family-like atmosphere.
Learning has to be fun, and it is critical that students enjoy the learning that takes place both in and out of the classroom. We stress enjoyment of learning and discovery, and reinforce it with interesting hands-on projects, field trips to unique locales, and a healthy dose of play.
Curriculum in the middle school is delivered in a variety of ways, which helps to develop both content mastery and experiential exploration. The arts, technology, and theater are integrated across the curriculum, so all learning styles are addressed.
Many faculty members at La Pietra teach in both the middle and upper schools, which ensures proper bridging of the curriculum between the two divisions. In addition, teachers have the opportunity to truly learn about each student and how best to encourage her unique style of learning.
