Academics

The foundation of La Pietra’s academic program is our Vision: We prepare young women for a life of fulfillment.

As educators, mentors and role models, our most important job is to prepare young women for what lies ahead. Properly prepared, they will have the skills and abilities to successfully meet life’s challenges and enjoy a life of fulfillment.

In order to realize this vision for our students, our commitment is to provide a vigorous college preparatory and life skills curriculum; to offer individualized education in an extraordinary learning environment; and to nurture the 5C’s: Confidence, Competence, Curiosity, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

La Pietra’s academic offerings are aligned with all of these elements, which provide the basis for the teaching and learning that occurs daily. Course offerings and teaching techniques are grounded in the most current research into how girls learn best.

To address the desire of girls to learn in social and interpersonal ways, we create collaborative learning communities and utilize the latest technology to enhance their effectiveness. We balance our girls’ independence with structure, support, and guidance through peer and personal interactions, hands-on work, project-based assignments, online courses, and we emphasize the role of teacher as facilitator. We favor a highly participatory and personal approach that addresses each girl’s needs.

La Pietra believes that middle school and upper school girls have unique and different academic needs. Our curriculum addresses those needs, focusing on exposure to a variety of disciplines and offerings in middle school, and individual student interests and passions in the upper school.

Block Schedule

To promote greater depth of understanding and maximize student learning, La Pietra employs a block schedule consisting of four terms in the school year. Each term is equivalent to one semester in a traditional schedule. Each day consists of four, 80 minute blocks of instruction time, which provides more time for project-based activities and group work than traditional schedules. Click here to see how the block schedule looks on paper.
